Lee Alexander McQueen, CBE (17 March 1969 – 11 February 2010) was a British fashion designer and couturier. He is known for having worked as chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001 and for founding his own Alexander McQueen label. His achievements in fashion earned him four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA's International Designer of the Year award in 2003.
Upon doing some research into McQueen, i realised that his works go far deeper than what one may presume. His pieces convey some of the harsh realities of life which are often disguised in the world. His work revolves around his life experiences and his views on society and the world. "This is hardly surprising; the influential fashion designer was responsible for some of the most iconic and fantastical creations that had ever been seen. With his theatrical romanticism, statements on normative beauty, and fierce versions of femininity, McQueen made waves that were felt far beyond the walls of the fashion industry."
"McQueen always started every collection with an idea or a concept for the runway presentation before the fashions. After the concept, he would have this elaborate sort of storyboard with these various references from art, from film, from music—his influences from everywhere." He delved deeply into the craft of clothing through his ideas and emotions and allowed them to infiltrate the various barriers that the world encompasses. Not only does his work consist of an abundant amount of geometric shapes and sharp edges, he conveys a story though each curve in his pieces, which I find extremely beautiful.
McQueens' runway shows express so much of what is held within him, they convey his approach to life and his personal perspective towards various cultural and social issues. McQueen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. His iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion.
“What I am trying to bring to fashion is a sort of originality,”
McQueen expressed this originality most fundamentally through his methods of cutting and construction, which were both innovative and revolutionary. This technical ingenuity was apparent as early as his graduation collection from the Fashion Design MA course at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London
